NVIDIA supporting PlayStation 4 with PhysX and APEX

Flowing cloth confirmed for next-gen NVIDIA will be supporting PlayStation 4 withPhysXandAPEX, it was announced today. Many of you will recognize the former physics technology by name, while the latter was not instantly recognizable to me. According to the company, APEX “lets artists create intricate physics-enabled environments. They can expand the quantity and visual quality of destructible objects; make smoke and other particle-based fluids integral to game play; and create life-like clothing that interacts with the character’s body to achieve more realism in their games....

PixelJunk Monsters headed to Steam with online co-op

Yet another re-release, but … co-op! Even though I’d rather get my hands onPixelJunk Inc.than double dip on yet another Q-Games title,PixelJunk Monsters Ultimateis tempting. It’scoming to Steamon June 30, 2025 with local and online cooperative play, gamepad support, an island that spits out randomly-generated levels, and other miscellaneous extras. Now, here’s the thing. It’s $19.99 regularly, or $16.99 right now during pre-release pricing. That’s not an unfair price to pay for what is a terrific tower defense game but, in the land of Steam sales — especially so soon after the summer promotion — I can see it being a tough sell....

Preview: Fate/Unlimited Codes

“Fate” goes back to a Japanese erotic game, a visual novel created by Type-Moon. It’s popularity grew enough to see a cleaned-up, more PG-13-ish anime released in Japan. Later came sequels, manga, and eventually an arcade and PS2 fighter calledFate/Unlimited Codes, brought to us by Capcom. For you perverts out there, I’ll say now that there’s nothing erotic about this fighting game. It’s just totally clean weapons and fast-paced action. That’s not a bad thing, mind you....

Sci-fi parkour platformer Super Cloudbuilt coming to PC and consoles

Now there’s a naming scheme I can get behind 2014’sCloudbuiltstruck me as conceptually interesting game that would get on my nerves as the difficulty ratcheted up, and as a result, it kind of justcame and went. Or so I thought! Coilworks and Double Eleven are bringing the speedrunning parkour shooter title back withSuper Cloudbuilt, a touched-up version for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One coming this summer. This is the definitive release for returning players, with “all previous DLC levels” included and “enhanced graphics, UI, and optimized gameplay,” but it’s also meant to be more intuitive for new folks like me....

Team Fortress 2sdays: It’s not Quakecon anymore

Every Tuesday a bunch of us Dtoiders get together and hop online to play some Team Fortress 2 on theofficial Destructoid server! You should join us! I’ve always wanted to go to Quakecon. Something about tons of people lugging their computers to craft a shrine to the PC gods has always appealed to me. I think I understand religious pilgrimages perfectly. Now we just need to create an altar to John Carmack and sacrifice console owners to it....

The rubbing of breasts on faces in Dragon Quest IX

TheDragon Questsaga began for me in earnest only withDragon Quest VIII. I had played previous games in the series, but not in any capacity other than “OK let’s do this oh WTF this is shit?” I never even got around to finishingDQVIIIdespite the fact that I loved it like my own magical Japanese/British love child. But the point is that I’m hardly an expert on the entirety of this crazyDragon Questthing, and that’s especially true of a little thing called the “puff-puff....

Unreal Engine 4: More brown in the distant console future

Today, at GamesFest, Epic Game’s Mike Capps discussed the development timeline of Unreal Engine 4 and the team’s focus on the next generation of consoles. It is a different swing than last generation, where the PC centric engine was adopted by console developers and made famous by games like Epic’s ownGears of War. Capps statement isn’t exactly surprising considering the domination of the modern console over the PC platform. What is different is the fact that the engine will continue taking forever to develop:...

Valve introduces a new type of controller for Steam

Look at this thing! The third and final of this week’s Steam announcements is what many of us predicted:a new input method. It’s funky looking, to say the least. The controller has dual trackpads, haptic feedback from dual linear resonant actuators, a touch screen, and physical buttons, of course. Despite how it looks, Valve says this will support the full Steam library through a legacy mode that treats the controller as a mouse and keyboard....

Who was your favorite new videogame character this year?

Share your stories with the Dtoid community [All week long we’re going to be asking for your thoughts on certain topics related to the year in gaming. Here’s the first!] 2013 was absolutely ripe with juicy new characters in the realm of gaming. Badass ’80s action heroes, hilarious narrators, endearing psychopaths, robot dogs, annoyingly philosophical trans-dimensional twins, ass-kicking little girls, and a little dude with a lamp hanging from his nose barely scratch the surface as to the eclectic selection or protagonists and NPCs on display this year....

Wii FPS The Conduit is going HD for smartphones

I completely forgot about this game I won’t blame you for only vaguely rememberingThe Conduit, the Wii-exclusive first-person shooter that developer High Voltage Software claimed would be so technologically proficient that it would demonstrate just how little other studios were pushing the Wii hardware. Thisgreat white hypedidn’t do much at retail, and even though it earned decent review scores, it wasn’t the big game-changer that HVS hoped it would be. But I respect the attempt!...

Four new DJ Hero videos for your amusement and my confusion

Watching footage ofDJ Heroreminds me in many ways of watching YouTube videos ofGuitar Hero IIin the days leading up to the game’s launch. I had never touched a guitar peripheral in my life, and the concept of hitting colored buttons to rock music was as foreign to me as it was intriguing. As I mentioned duringWednesday’s newsabout DJ Yoda and The Scratch Perverts offering their mixes toDJ Hero, I know almost nothing about the subject other than what good old reliable pop culture has taught me about disc jockeys....

Get revenge cowboy style in Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

Call of Juarez: Bound in Bloodisn’t a WWII shooter, thankfully. It’s good old-fashioned Western — a genre that hasn’t been thoroughly raped and pillaged. Ubisoft recently released a trailer for the game (I know, it’s movie night) showing off some of its grit and story elements — shootouts and Aztec treasure, hooray! One thing is definitely confirmed: the McCall brothers want revenge. And it doesn’t look like anything or anyone is going to stop them from getting it....
