While Edmund McMillen, the developer ofBinding of Isaac, might’ve said that his next flagship releaseMewgenicswon’t be coming out anytime soonearlier this year, its development is actually going great from the look of things. A new update summarizes howMewgenicsis coming along, and it’s looking swell.

To be fair, McMillen appears to be quite careful not to hint at a release date of any sort, though the status update itself certainly suggests that things are moving along at a brisk pace. For example, we now know thatallofMewgenics‘ very many cat abilities are now fully done and implemented, outside of some relatively minor polishing. Similarly, McMillen’s team is also finalizing a singer for the game’s final track, and that’s nothing if not promising.

Mewgenics’ latest status update is promising, if inconclusive

According to McMillen, here’s the current status ofMewgenics‘ prolonged production process:

Granted,Mewgenicsis still fairly mysterious in the grand scheme of things, so we don’t actually know for sure whether there are some other huge and wholly unimplemented gameplay features still looming in the background. At the same time, though, McMillen seems to be implying that things are close enough to completion that there’s a “light at the end of the tunnel” in some ways.

“Overall, I’m feeling pretty good about where we are at and being basically content complete by New Year’s,” writes McMillen. “Once that happens, we will polish and start the hype train, lock down a release date, and crunch on the details until release! Exciting :)”

All of this information comes fromMcMillen’s latest Steam blog post, where he goes into considerable detail on howMewgenics‘ NPCs and trading will work in practice. McMillen discusses an issue where the game’s economy ended up being “a bit too money-focused” until his team turned cats themselves into currency, which somehow makes perfect sense in the context of McMillen’s previous work. The blog is a great read in general, too, and I highly recommend it if you’ve got a few minutes to kill.
