‘Unlocking level system is [archaic]’

If the (expected) seven hours it takes to finishCall of Duty: Black Ops III‘s single-player campaign is too much of a time commitment, note that you can just skip right on to the end of the game. (And if you’re on PS3 or 360, you can skip the single-player entirely, as itwill not be included.)

Campaign and Zombies director Jason Blundell explained toEurogamer, “The unlocking level system is an archaic mentality we’ve had since we did bedroom development back in the day – you do this, then go on to the next one.”

“Consumers and game players in general are far more mature these days. There are so many things vying for our interests today. It’s about, how do they want to consume it? Maybe they put it down on level two, and then they’re in work the next day, and some guy says, ‘dude, you’ve got to check out level four!’ And he’s like, ‘okay, I’ll have a quick look.’ That’s totally fine. I think it’s their choice.”

Given how short the games are and how quickly people put video game endings on YouTube anyways, it doesn’t really matter. The big thing here, to me, is being able to just fly past any potential really shitty, frustrating mission (thoughCall of Dutyisn’t real known for this as they’re fairly easy games meant to keep players flowing through the bombastic story). But can you imagine being able to skip all the Batmobile segments inArkham Knight? Blundell likened it to Netflix, which releases shows likeHouse of Cardsall at once, and that’s a perfect popcorny, meaningless string of cliffhangers to liken aCall of Dutycampaign to. The last one even had Kevin Spacey, too. You rememberAdvanced Warfare, right? It came out less than year ago and was about Kevin Spacey in the future (spiritual successor toK-PAX).
