Baldur’s Gate 3is filled with a litany of odd ends and secrets that can benefit the player. Act I is especially dense with these given its expansive areas.

The Chest of the Mundane is among these curios and is a fun early game discovery. It’s located in the Underdark’sArcane Tower, on the first floor’s right-side balcony (around X: -40, Y: 264). Despite its name, this chest is anything but mundane, with its title stemming from its effects on objects.

Everything put inside the Chest of the Mundane then transforms into an unremarkable object, namely various pieces of kitchenware. Beyond donning its features, everything inside also took on these objects’ weight. With its unique feature and manageable weight, it became a popular tool for players to use as a Bag of Holding stand-in.

Can you still carry around the Chest of the Mundane?

Here is the thing with the Chest of the Mundane’s usefulness: it was a bug. AmidstBaldur’s Gate 3‘sPatch 1 updatewas a fix that made it too heavy for characters to carry. This means that recent versions ofBaldur’s Gate 3will not let you transport the Chest of the Mundane with you even with 100kg of free space in your inventory.

It also means that using the Chest of the Mundane is possible, but only after bringingBaldur’s Gate 3back to its earliest versions. Since the Chest of the Mundane fix rolled out with Patch 1, so you will miss all post-launch features. This includes things like the new epilogue, so it’s not worth reverting for this specific exploit.

There is also some decent loot in it, including the boots Mystra’s Grace for a free Feather Fall. So despite it not being useful for long-term carrying capacity, it’s still worth checking out.

While it was fun messing with this peculiar object, its readjusted weight threw its previous practicality out. Patching out potentially fun exploits is an unfortunate side to post-launch support, butBaldur’s Gate 3at least has the upside of being an amazing time even without some of the more unintentionally fun moments.
