By game developers, for game developers

Sony put the future of the DualShock 4 in the hands of developers, who dictated changes to the longstanding controller’s form and feel. Guerrilla Games (Killzone) and Evolution Studios (DriveClub), in an interview withEdge, discussed the pivotal role they played in encouraging Sony to make changes.

Prior to consultation, the DualShock 4 had outwardly curved triggers, the thumbsticks weren’t indented, and it relied on accelerometers instead of high-frequency gyros (mmm, delicious). None of these are jaw-dropping changes, but they all contribute to a controller thatfeelsright. As evena great-looking controller can make for a miserable experienceif it gets in the way of gaming.

“[Early DualShock 4 prototypes] looked like something that Bruce Wayne would carry,” Evolution’s technical director Scott Kirkland said, in anEdgeinterview. “It was very industrial in design, plastic, [and] there were things that would come off. I remember seeing paperwork for the import and export prototype, and you know all of them were handmade and insanely expensive and we felt privileged to be getting these samples.”
