Square Enix is known for using its own, internally developed tech forFinal Fantasygames. The White Engine, later known as Crystal Tools, seems to be one of the reasonsFinal Fantasy XIIIwas delayed for so long andFinal Fantasy XIII Versusis coming out 10 years later asFinal Fantasy XV. ButFinal Fantasy XVuses Square’s proprietary next-gen engine, Luminous, the same engine that produced this impressivetech demo.

And yet with the hotly anticipatedFinal Fantasy VII Remake, Square Enix is using the popular Unreal Engine 4, Epic boastedtodayfollowing the first wider look at gameplay. Square earlier confirmedFinal Fantasy VII Remakewould not run on Luminous andKingdom Hearts 3recently made the switch to Unreal 4, too.
