When you begin your journey on a new map inPEAK, one of the first items you’ll encounter is the compass. While there are several compass types in the game, this initial spawn one raises the most questions, specifically over its usefulness.

What does the Compass do in PEAK?

InPEAK, the only purpose of the compass you find at spawn is to help you figure out which direction you’re going, so you don’t get lost while climbing. If you use it at spawn, you’ll notice that the mountain is directly north of you, making it easier to reorient yourself if you run toward some luggage or fall a few ledges and need to figure out where you landed.

Aside from this, the compass isn’t particularly helpful in collecting badges, progressing through later levels, or unlocking secrets. Its sole purpose is to point you in the right direction, making it easier to get your bearings when you first start yourPEAKplaythrough. That way, if you’re unsure where you’re supposed to go, you’ll know to head north until you see a large mountain to climb.

You can also use the compass to help a friend navigate back to the group if they get sidetracked. For example, if you started to veer east but someone had to climb west to collect luggage, it’ll be easier to guide them back to where you are by describing your directions. Overall, though, it isn’t worth taking up valuable inventory space and carrying capacity.

All Compass types and uses in PEAK

Although the compass you find at spawn isn’t too useful, that doesn’t mean you should ignore every type you spot. Some are very handy, depending on how you use them. Here’s a list of everycompass you can obtain inPEAKand their purposes:

At the time of writing, the Warp Compass is bugged, causing it to teleport anyone using it under the map. Landfall and Aggro Crab subsequently removed it temporarily, but if this issue is patched, it can help you return to one of your groupmates with the press of a button.

The Pirate’s Compass, on the other hand, makes searching for luggage bags much easier. If you’re struggling to find food, rope, or other resources, using this compass to search for a few bags can easily save your run.
