Back to the Future

It might be time to polish those sunglasses and dig out that trenchcoat, as rumors abound this fine morning that cyberpunk RPG seriesDeus Exis gearing up for a return. That’s according toBloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who stated that the longtime developer is deep into its production cycle following its recent release from the Square Enix umbrella.

As reported yesterday, Schreier notes that Eidos Montreal is currently working on the franchise’s new entry alongside several other titles, including a brand-new IP and several co-development projects with Xbox, such as a new release in the high-fantasy series,Fable. TheDeus Exrelease is said to be in its “very, very early” stages, so I wouldn’t go expecting any announcements until at least later 2023, or perhaps even further down the line. Still, fans will be pleased to hear that the cult series has not been set adrift.

The firstDeus Extitle launched on PC way back in 2000, spinning a typically cyberpunkian tale of capitalism gone wild and the nanotech-infused rebels who aim to bring the structure crashing down. While the acclaimed release was followed by several sequels of varying quality, it was the launch of the 2007 epicDeus Ex: Human Revolutionthat truly brought the series its mainstream success. The most recent game in the series is 2016’sDeus Ex: Mankind Divided, which continued the franchise’s penchant for complex action, deep narrative, and depressingly familiar political overtones.

Deus Ex: Mankind Dividedis available now on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
